Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How often do gas fee estimates update, and do I need an account to use the extension? The Blocknative Gas Estimator updates every for all users. A free account is required to access all estimations.

  2. What are Ethereum gas fees, and why do I need to pay them? Ethereum gas represents the computational effort to process transactions on the network. Every transaction requires a gas fee, which is paid to miners. Fees vary based on transaction size and network congestion. Read our articles for a comprehensive overview on Gas.

  3. How are gas fees calculated on Ethereum, and what are the key terms? Under EIP-1559, fees consist of three parts:

    • Base Fee: Set by the network and burned during transactions.

    • Max Priority Fee: Optional tip to incentivize miners.

    • Max Fee: Maximum amount a user is willing to pay per gas unit. For more on EIP-1559 calculations, view our blog.

  4. What is gwei, and why are gas fees shown in this unit? Gwei is 1/1,000,000,000 of 1 ETH, making it easier to represent small amounts. All Ethereum fees are displayed in gwei for simplicity.

  5. What happens if a transaction fails? If a transaction fails, gas is not refunded because validators still expended resources. However, any excess gas will be returned to the sender.
